    Ich denke zum Beispiel an die kleinen Inseln u.a. Zypern.

    (Aber ich war nie in Zypern und weiß nicht, ob es stimmt.

    I don't fully trust translators with an accurate translation so I use both languages. :)

    Wales is a country within the United Kingdom.

    The Native langauge is Welsh, but its use is decreasing because the use of English has increased.

    Dieser Thread ist sehr lehrreich und lehrt uns sehr.

    Wales ist ein Land im Vereinigten Königreich.

    Die Muttersprache ist Walisisch, aber ihre Verwendung nimmt ab, weil die Verwendung von Englisch zugenommen hat.

    Grüße aus der Mülltonne! Ich habe es gewagt, selbst das Übersetzer-Programm zu sein.

    Also zu sagen "mir fehlen die Worte" führt Deiner Meinung nach direkt in die Mülltonne, selbst wenn diese mit einem :) dekoriert ist?


    Now back to the quiz. The 11 ft. 11,5 in. gauge (why that odd? even taking into consideration English eccentricity in relation to measurement multiples and gauges) seems to have been quite popular in Wales. Too many places to look at with limuted time resources.


    Zurück zum Quiz: Die 597 mm-Spur (warum so "krumm" sogar für englische Exzentrik in Bezug auf Maße und Spurweiten) scheint in Wales ganz populär gewesen zu sein. Zu viele Strecken, auf die man gucken müsste bei begrenzten Zeitressourcen.

    The translation is correct, don't worry about that. I think it's the clue itself which may have been misleading. It did mislead me, for sure. While it appears to be formally and politically correct, common knowledge or public perception are different, at least over here. Let's have a look at Welsh language - Wikipedia (yes, I know, always take Wikipedia articles with a pinch of salt, but in this case it is good enough, I believe):


    "Of usual residents in Wales aged three and over, 19.0% were able to speak Welsh according to the United Kingdom Census 2011. According to the 2001 Census, 20.8 per cent of the population aged 3+ were able to speak Welsh. This suggests that there was a decrease in the number of Welsh speakers in Wales from 2001 to 2011 – from about 582,000 to 562,000 respectively. However, according to the Welsh Language Use Survey 2013–15, 24 per cent of people aged three and over living in Wales were able to speak Welsh, implying a possible increase in the prevalence of the Welsh language since the 2011 census.


    The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 gave the Welsh language official status in Wales, making it the only language that is de jure official in any part of the United Kingdom, with English being de facto official. The Welsh language, along with English, is also a de jure official language of the National Assembly for Wales."


    So, a quarter of the population "is able to speak Welsh". Does this mean, it's the first language a child will learn from their parents? Is it the language in which people (these 25%) communicate with each other? That, in many people's opinion, would make it the native language. So, it's just a misunderstanding, that's all.


    In any case, we learned a bit more about the role of the Welsh language, and this is one of the interesting side effects of this competition, isn't it? It would be rather boring, if we only had pictures without context.



    Kurzfassung auf deutsch: Die Übersetzung war korrekt. Es war der Hinweis selbst, der in die Irre führen konnte. So war es jedenfalls bei mir. Formal und politisch mag die Aussage korrekt sein. Die öffentliche Wahrnehmung aber ist wohl eine andere. Also ein schlichtes Missverständnis.


    In jedem Fall haben wir etwas über die Rolle der walisischen Sprache gelernt, einer der interessanten Nebeneffekte des Eisenbahnrätsels. Wäre es nicht recht langweilig, nur Bilder ohne Kontext zu haben?

    Lots of grown trees here now.
